May 30, 2008 - Solidarity Night for Myanmar
QUEZON CITY, PHILIPPINES. On the evening of May 24, 2008, members of
Fondacio Philippines, students and formators of the Institute of Formation, and
friends gathered together for Eucharist, fellowship, and to listen to first-hand
testimonies about the recent cyclone Nargis which hit Myanmar, and killed tens of
thousands of people, and left several more homeless and hungry. Carol Daria, of the
mission team to Myanmar, and the seven (7) new IOF students from the country
shared their experiences and the plight of those gravely affected by the calamity.
Most of these students found it very difficult to leave behind their families in the
wake of the recent tragedy, and to come to the Philippines for their one-year
formation program, which starts in June.
Through pictures and the group’s personal testimonies, everyone who was present
became more aware of the extent of the damage that the cyclone brought on the
people. It was certainly a call to be one body and one family, and to be a living hope
for these people. Concretely, there is the urgency to help financially and to continue
praying with, and for them.
In response to the call to help, the mission team has decided to forego the start of
the Youth Leadership Formation Program, to assist the local dioceses in the
distribution of relief goods to the people in the affected areas.
Fondacio continues to welcome all those who would want to offer their help. For
